Bus Driver
The bus driver is responsible for safely transporting the touring party between cities in the tour bus. They typically drive through the night while the crew sleeps, then stay in a hotel and sleep during the day while the show is happening — operating on different hours than the rest of the personnel. Depending on how long the drives are or if they're driving to the show the same day, this schedule can vary. DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations dictate mandatory rest periods that directly affect routing — the driver's hours are a hard constraint on how far the bus can travel between stops.
Why the driver matters
Everyone's safety is in the bus driver's hands. A good driver knows the routes, manages fuel stops efficiently, handles border crossings smoothly, and gets the bus parked at the venue without drama. Experienced tour managers treat their drivers well and factor driver rest into every scheduling decision.
