Crew-ni-form
The crew-ni-form (a portmanteau of "crew" and "uniform") is the unofficial dress code of touring production crews: black t-shirt, black pants, black hoodie, black shoes. All black, every day.
Why all black
Crew wear black so they're invisible on stage and backstage during the show. When a tech walks across the stage to fix a problem mid-set, black clothing minimizes their visibility to the audience. It's practical, not a fashion statement — though it's become a cultural identity. When you see someone at an airport dressed head-to-toe in black with a tour laminate around their neck, you know.
The term
"Crew-ni-form" is insider slang — you won't find it in any official handbook. It's one of those terms that surfaces in backstage conversations and on touring social media, a wink at the shared uniform nobody officially mandated but everyone adopted.
