Gaff Tape

Gaff tape (also called gaffers tape) is a strong, cloth-backed adhesive tape that is arguably the most-used tool in live production. It's used to secure cables to the stage floor, mark positions for performers and equipment, label road cases and gear, tape down setlists, and fix just about anything temporarily.

Why gaff tape, not duct tape

The key difference: gaff tape comes off cleanly without leaving sticky residue. Duct tape leaves a mess on stage floors, equipment, and cables. Venues and crew hate residue. Gaff tape is more expensive than duct tape but worth it for every professional application.

Colors and uses

Gaff tape comes in multiple colors. Black is standard (matches the crew-ni-form and disappears on black stages). White is used for labeling and marking positions. Fluorescent colors mark hazards or positions that need to be visible in low light.
