Stagehand
A stagehand is a local crew member who helps with load-in, load-out, and stage setup at a venue. They move equipment, run cables, set up backline, assist with rigging, and generally provide the extra hands that make setup and teardown possible within the schedule.
How stagehands work
Stagehands are hired by the venue or promoter and directed by the touring production manager or stage manager. The number of stagehands needed is specified in the technical rider and confirmed during the advance. Their call time for load-in is one of the first details locked in.
Union vs. non-union
In larger venues, stagehands are often IATSE union members, which means specific rules around call times, overtime, and work scope. In smaller venues and clubs, stagehands may be house staff or freelancers. Either way, they're crucial to making the show day work.
