Backline Tech

A backline tech is a crew member responsible for setting up, maintaining, and troubleshooting the musical equipment (backline) on stage. On larger tours, the role splits into specialized positions: guitar tech, drum tech, keyboard tech, and bass tech — each dedicated to a specific instrument or performer.

What backline techs do

Before the show: unload gear, set up instruments and amplifiers per the stage plot, tune instruments, and run through the line check. During the show: stand side-stage ready to swap guitars, fix problems, and make adjustments. After the show: pack everything back into road cases for load-out.

On fly dates and festivals

When the tour doesn't carry its own backline, the tech coordinates with local backline rental companies to ensure the right gear is provided, set up correctly, and ready for soundcheck.
