Security Advance
A security advance is the pre-show planning handled by the head of touring security (or the tour manager on smaller tours without dedicated security). It's a separate advance from the venue advance or production advance, focused specifically on safety and access.
What a security advance covers
Access points and credential checkpoint placement, backstage perimeter and security staffing, artist arrival and departure routes, emergency procedures and nearest hospital, barricade configuration, VIP and meet & greet logistics, coordination with local security and local law enforcement, and any known threats or concerns for the market.
Why security advances are separate
Security has concerns that don't overlap with production or hospitality — they need to think about crowd management, emergency egress, and artist safety in ways that the PM and TM aren't focused on. The security advance happens in parallel with the other advances, and the information feeds into the overall show-day plan.
